Some real-world shooting conditions require more aggressive initiation than provided by standard primers. Large cases, cold weather, and certain propellants often require a hotter primer flame and a longer burn. Magnum primers burn a bit hotter for a bit longer. They’re made to light hard to ignite powers and for extreme cold weather shooting(some powders get hard to ignite in the cold). You don’t need them for either of those powders. If your manual says to use them, do so, but they won’t hurt anything if it doesn’t.
“… magnum primers hold up better…” No. The only difference between a magnum primer and a standard primer is the priming compound.
Yes as you have seen the primer can make a huge difference in accuracy. You can most likely get that accuracy back using the br-2’s but you’ll need to rework the load. The powder charge will be different and the seating depth of the bullet could change.
